Applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Oregon can be a life-changing step if you’re unable to work due to a medical condition. The process can seem overwhelming, but understanding the steps involved can help you apply correctly and improve your chances of approval.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility for SSDI

Before applying, you must meet two main requirements:

  • Work History: You need enough work credits, which you earn by working and paying Social Security taxes. Most applicants need about 5 years of work in the past 10 years.
  • Disability: Your medical condition must prevent you from working for at least 12 months or be expected to result in death. Your condition must also meet the SSA’s definition of disability.

Tip: The SSA’s Listing of Impairments outlines conditions that may qualify for SSDI.

Step 2: Gather Required Documentation

To support your SSDI application, prepare the following:

  • Medical records from all treating physicians and specialists
  • Names, addresses, and dates of all medical providers
  • Work history for the last 15 years
  • List of medications and treatments
  • Most recent tax return or W-2

Having thorough and organized documentation is one of the most important parts of your application.

Step 3: Submit Your SSDI Application

You can apply in one of the following ways:

  • Online at www.ssa.gov (recommended for faster processing)
  • By phone at 1-800-772-1213
  • In person at your local Oregon Social Security office (appointment recommended)

Be detailed, honest, and accurate in your application. Missing or incomplete information can delay your case or lead to a denial.

Step 4: Monitor Your Application Status

After submission:

  • Check the status by creating a “my Social Security” account on ssa.gov
  • Respond promptly if the SSA requests additional information
  • Keep copies of everything you submit

Processing time in Oregon typically takes 3 to 6 months for an initial decision.

Step 5: Prepare for a Possible Appeal

Many first-time applications are denied — this doesn’t mean you won’t qualify.

If you are denied:

  1. Request Reconsideration
  2. Attend an ALJ Hearing
  3. Go through the Appeals Council
  4. File in Federal District Court, if necessary

Don't give up — the appeals process is there for valid claims to be reconsidered.
